The GAL Xlokk Foundation was set up in 2008 to implement the LEADER programme in the South-East territory of Malta. The Foundation is one of the Local Action Group which has been chosen to implement the LEADER programme for Malta for two consecutive programming period and is in process of being accepted for the Common Agricultural Policy SP for years 2023 to 2027.
The GAL Xlokk territory is made up of seventeen (17) localities. The seven localities forming the perimeter are the coastal localities of Qrendi, Żurrieq, Birżebbuġia, Marsaxlokk, Marsascala, Xgħajra, and Kalkara. The other localities forming part of the territory are the inland towns of Qormi, Luqa, Mqabba, Kirkop, Safi, Gudja, Santa Luċija, Għaxaq, Żejtun and Żabbar.
The total area covered by the GAL Xlokk territory adds up to 71km2. In total, as per the latest Census of Population and Housing 2021 by the National Statistics Office (NSO), there were 128,358 residents in the GAL Xlokk territory, making up 24.7% of the Maltese population.
