L’Olio di Oliva nel Mediterraneo under M19.3 (2014-2020 Programme)
The project involved: (i) a collaboration on the recovery, full characterization and evaluation of the olives’ genetic resources in Malta between GAL Valle Umbra e Sibellini and GAL Xlokk, together with the participation of the Institute of Earth Systems (UOM) and Italian research institutes, (ii) an exchange of good practices in olive cultivation. These exchanges focused on the (i) exploitation and recovery of the variety of excellent traditional extra virgin oil, both cultivated and not (ii) exploitation and recovery of the traditional Maltese table olive, with a variety of white fruit.
The research aimed to carry out DNA and molecular testing on the Maltese native varieties of olives dating back centuries. In collaboration with the Italian institute specialising in this field of research, the recovery of these native varieties of olives will eventually help regenerate olive oil production derived from these varieties. The project also involved the publication of two scientific papers. Other main activities included an exchange of information, study visits, meetings and workshops with local producers and schools, research campaigns about the variety of olives present in the Maltese Islands, networking with all involved actors.
